Poem: “Sunrise” by Scott Schuleit (2025)

Sunrise

Gentle wind.
A forest of stark trees.
Song of the nightbird long gone.
Emergence of sun
above dark earth, rising.
Shadows withdrawing,
slowly furling, receding
from the horizon.
Black, leafless branches
twisting across the sun’s round,
contained, smokeless flame.
Distant ball of fire
radiating, almost vibrating,
trembling the early morning air
with the intensity of its pure energy.
Unseen oceans of orange-gold
roiling, seething
over the vast curve
of its fiery surface.
Celestial circularity,
fractured sphere, broken portal
hinting at the undimmed beauty
of another world.
