Photo: Tiny footsteps in new snow

One reason I love winter is the chance to see otherwise invisible evidence of our neighbors.

In this case, it’s the footsteps of a Dark-eyed slate colored Junco in newly fallen snow. Juncos are part of the sparrow family, birds of the ground where they hop about in search of bits of seed. Very rarely do we see land on one of the feeders, and then only on the platform feeder, with it’s flat base parallel to the ground. And that lasts only briefly, one or two hops across the platform, then over the side to the ground.

This photo was taken on our deck, near the feeders where bits of seed get blown or flung.
