On a pleasant day last summer—under 75 degrees, partly cloudy—I decided to sit on our deck to write. Finches, song sparrows, chickadees, and nuthatches thronged and squabbled over the feeders. In the woods there was the sound of woodpeckers. High overhead ravens leisurely flew in twos and threes. In their coop Margie’s chickens clucked, boked, and chuckled contentedly.
As I got set up, a katydid suddenly appeared on my laptop. I did not see it arrive, but I leisurely, eagerly watched until it chose to leave.
Were those moments of watching less productive than when I was busy writing? For the followers of Jesus, the answer should be obvious.
